Safety at bp
Here’s a snapshot of bp’s safety efforts – and how we’re building an enduring safety culture
At bp, safety comes first. We want to improve our safety performance and work toward the goal we set in 2021 to eliminate fatalities, life-changing injuries and tier 1 process safety events.
Our safety culture
Since 2019, our combined reported tier 1 and 2 process safety events decreased by 60 percenta. That improvement is partly attributable to our Safety Leadership Principles, which are designed to guide behavior and ways of working across bp toward a robust, consistent safety culture.

- We understand how work actually happens
- We learn why mistakes occur and respond supportively.
These principles are guided by human performance. They enable a culture of care by helping us understand how people interact with their working environment – recognizing that we all make mistakes. We take action to prevent and reduce the consequences of these mistakes.
