Reducing carbon emissions in Portugal
We’re excited to have marked the first milestone in rolling out our carbon reducing start-stop technology on hydrant refuelling vehicles. Portugal has become the first country in our network of operated locations to begin implementing this innovative technology

Reducing carbon emissions by an average of 25%, our start-stop technology automatically shuts down and restarts the vehicle engine to reduce the amount of time the engine spends idling. The carbon emissions savings from using this technology is an impressive 3.5 tonnes of CO2 per year.

How did we go about achieving this milestone?

We identified the vehicles within our fleet that were most suited to the technology before working with the vendor to design a system that would suit Air bp’s hydrant fleet. The technology then underwent rigorous testing to ensure it produced the expected emissions savings and met stringent technical safety requirements.

Commenting on how carbon reduction forms a key part of Air bp’s global operations, Gigi Yuen, Air bp’s global carbon neutral leader said: “In 2016 we made a 10-year pledge to retain our carbon neutral accreditation through adhering to a carbon reduction plan. Over the past two years we have worked hard to achieve this first milestone and continue to work determinedly towards achieving our goal.”

What’s next?

Now we’ve started rolling out start-stop technology, the plan is to have it installed on all our new hydrant dispensers and retrofitted existing hydrant dispensers of less than 10 years old.

Some additional initiatives we have introduced and continue to use in line with our commitment to remain carbon neutral across our global network of operated into-plane sites is reducing the number of journeys made by trucks on the road; using electric powered vehicles which offer a 100% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions; and using an in-line magnetic filter, Magna-Strain within pipelines to reduce the electrical demand on pumps.
