BP to continue its support for Azerbaijan’s National Olympic and Paralympic Teams until 2016

BP today extended its partnership with Azerbaijan’s National Olympic Committee and National Paralympic Committee. In doing so, BP will continue to support the country’s national teams and its elite athletes until the end of 2016. The original agreement was signed in January 2012, ahead of the London 2012 Games.

 

Addressing the guests at the signing event, Gordon Birrell, BP’s Regional President for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, said: “We’re delighted to announce that we’ll continue to be the official energy and oil and gas partner for Azerbaijan’s National Olympic Committee and National Paralympic Committee until the end of 2016. Watching the progress of our athlete ambassadors at the London 2012 Games generated a huge amount of pride, particularly when they returned home with their medals. We shall continue to watch the athletes’ progress as they prepare to compete and win medals for Azerbaijan.

 

“Since BP first opened an office in Baku in 1992, the company has been closely involved in many aspects of Azerbaijan’s life, building a track record of delivery and creating close partnerships with governments in the region, companies and other stakeholders. The extension of the agreement with the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee and National Paralympic Committee demonstrates BP’s long-term commitment to the country.” Birrell said.

 

Chingiz Huseynzade, Vice-President of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee, said: “We are delighted to extend the partnership with BP and we look forward to working together on the development of Azerbaijani athletes to bring more sporting success to the nation.”

 

Ilgar Rahimov, President of the Azerbaijan National Paralympic Committee, said: “BP’s continued support of Paralympic sports in Azerbaijan helps to reinforce the message that sport is for everyone in our community.”

BP is the leading operator in Azerbaijan and the South Caspian region, and operates major oil and gas development and exploration projects, as well as the world-class Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil export pipeline: The projects BP operates in this region include:

 

  1. The supergiant Azeri, Chirag and Deepwater Gunashli (ACG) oil field has been producing since 1997. The production started from the Chirag section of the field and it still continues successfully, this was followed by Azeri Project - Central Azeri production started in February 2005, West Azeri started in December 2005, and East Azeri came on stream in October 2006 with the Deepwater Gunashli section starting production in April 2008. The next step of ACG development - Chirag Oil Project (COP) is expected to begin production later this year. To date the field has produced about 2.2 bn barrels of oil.
  2. The world-class Shah Deniz gas condensate field – Stage 1 development of Shah Deniz is currently at plateau with production facilities running at maximum capacity of 966 million standard cubic feet per day and approximately 55,000 barrels of condensate per day when markets are available; Stage 2, is a giant project, currently at the design stage, expected to add a further 16 billion cubic metres of gas production a year to the existing production from Stage 1, opening up Azerbaijan as a major gas supplier to new gas markets through a new Southern Gas Corridor. 
  3. The Safag-Asiman production sharing agreement (PSA) was signed in Baku in October, 2010.  The project has already conducted the first 3-D seismic survey of the area. Currently the acquired data is being processed. This processing is believed to be the largest 3D survey ever processed in-country.
  4. The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil export pipeline has been operational since June 2006. To date BTC has carried about 1.7 bn barrels of crude oil to world markets loaded onto 2140 tankers at Ceyhan. BTC is now capable of exporting 1.2 million barrels of oil per day.
