Bintuni City, Teluk Bintuni Regency, Papua Barat Province — SKK Migas together with Tangguh LNG, through the Tangguh Public Health programme, supported the Teluk Bintuni Regency health office in declaring seven villages in Tomu District as open defecation-free (ODF) during the 60th National Health Day celebration on 12 November 2024. This initiative aims to improve access to sanitation and environmental health while fostering clean and healthy living habits in Teluk Bintuni Regency.
During the event, seven villages —Sebyar Rejosari, Wanagir, Tomu, Ekam, Ayot, Adur, and Totitra— have achieved certification for proper sanitation practices, marking an important milestone in improving public health and hygiene.
The declaration is part of the Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM) programme, which empowers communities to take collective action for better environmental health. STBM is built on five key pillars: ending open defecation, handwashing with soap, managing household drinking water and food, managing household waste, and managing domestic wastewater.
“SKK Migas and Tangguh LNG are committed to supporting sustainable public health initiatives in Teluk Bintuni,” said dr. Bambang Setiawan, health discipline lead at bp Indonesia. “This ODF Village Declaration is a significant step toward creating healthier environments for local communities, and we hope this collaboration will continue to bring positive changes to more areas.”
Separately, Franky D. Mobilala, head of the Teluk Bintuni Regency health office, expressed hope that "this ODF declaration will not stop at Tomu District but will also expand to other districts."
The event also included education sessions on stunting prevention and management for the local community. It was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from the Teluk Bintuni health office’s public health team, the head of Tomu District, local police and military representatives, the head of Aranday health center and staff, Posyandu (integrated service post) volunteers from Tomu District, and the Tangguh public health field team.
The Teluk Bintuni Health Office reported that as of 2023, only 18% or 34 villages in the region had achieved ODF status, compared to 70% of villages nationally.
