Weriagar District, Teluk Bintuni Regency, Papua Barat Province – Tangguh LNG and SKK Migas held a training session in Weriagar District to help improve the quality and packaging of salted fish, a key local product. The training, which took place on 5 November 2024, involved 62 participants from six villages who are part of the "Popatira" business group. The goal was to boost the quality of the product and strengthen the local salted fish industry.
“This training shows bp Indonesia's commitment to supporting the local economy and improving the lives of people around our operations. By helping improve the quality of salted fish, we’re making these products more competitive and supporting the long-term economic growth of Papua Barat,” said Samuk Konyorah, social performance and delivery manager at bp Indonesia.
During the event, Tangguh LNG also provided business equipment to the leader of the Popatira group, Mama Cornelia Bauw.
The session took place at Mogotira Village Hall and was opened by the Head of Weriagar District, Ibrahim Patiran. He appreciated the initiative, saying, “Weriagar has great potential in fisheries, and it’s important to use this to improve the community's economy. Support like this from Tangguh LNG is vital for creating positive changes.”
Facilitated by Tangguh LNG’s Fachmy Masiwan Tkuwain, the training focused on ensuring consistent quality and proper packaging for the salted fish products. “By setting clear standards, the Popatira group can ensure high-quality products that are more competitive in the market,” he explained.
Participants also learned how to calculate production costs to set fair and profitable prices.
The participants were very enthusiastic about the programme. Mama Wati Braweri, a member of the Popatira group, said, “We’re very happy to have this training, especially for us mothers in Weriagar. We hope programmes like this will continue.” Another participant, Mama Yuliance Patiran, added that the training taught her how to produce better-quality salted fish and set the right selling prices.
As a next step, Tangguh LNG plans to provide further support, including helping the group strengthen their businesses, manage finances, obtain permits, and expand their market to other areas like Bintuni, Sorong, Manokwari, and Fakfak.
