From methane to artificial intelligence: What to watch for at CERAWeek 2019

Group Chief Executive Bob Dudley will join other top BP leaders at CERAWeek by IHS Markit, the energy industry’s premier annual gathering of executives, government officials, innovators and other leaders

 

Chaired by renowned energy expert Daniel Yergin, CERAWeek 2019 will take place in Houston from March 11–15.

From upstream to downstream and everything in between, CERAWeek covers all aspects of global energy, and BP executives will lend their insight and experience on a wide variety of topics.On March 12, Bob Dudley will deliver a keynote address, “New world of rivalries,” during a dinner hosted by Yergin, and then will participate in a question-and-answer session.

 

Other BP leaders will discuss important issues related to the energy transition, global market trends, strategic opportunities, innovative technologies, and business competitiveness.

 

For example, Upstream Chief Executive Bernard Looney will participate in a March 13 panel titled “Methane Emissions: Getting to zero,” and Downstream Chief Executive Tufan Erginbilgic will participate in a March 12 panel titled “Downstream: Competing through the cycles.”

 

Also on March 12, Gordon Birrell, chief operating officer for production, transformation and carbon, will participate in a panel titled “Global Upstream Strategies: Diversification vs. specialization,” and Group Chief Economist Spencer Dale will participate in a panel titled “Oil Markets: Riding the wild roller coaster.”

 

On the technology side, John Mingé, former chairman and president of BP America, will discuss carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS) in a March 13 panel titled “CCUS Strategies and Business Models.” In addition, Morag Watson, vice president, digital innovation, will participate in a March 11 panel titled “Artificial Intelligence and the Energy System: Disruption or transformation?”

 

Meanwhile, Felipe Arbelaez, regional president for Latin America, will participate in a March 12 panel titled “Latin Energy: Aiming for competitiveness.”

 

That same day, Alex Jensen, senior vice president, Retail Europe, and global chief marketing officer, fuels, will participate in a panel titled “Retail Fuels Marketing: Back in fashion.”

 

This year’s event will mark the 38th anniversary of CERAWeek, which has been ranked among the top five “corporate leader” conferences in the world. The program provides comprehensive insight into the global and regional energy future by addressing key issues - from markets and geopolitics to technology, project costs, energy and the environment, finance, operational excellence and cyber risks.
