BP honors top students in New York, New Jersey

Release date:
April 27, 2016
BP Community Scholarship program has awarded over $3 million to more than 1,900 students since 1987

NEW YORK – BP announced today it will award scholarships to 40 top high school and college students from New York and New Jersey as part of its longstanding commitment to the region.

The students will receive the scholarships at the company’s 29th annual BP Community Scholarship event on May 26 at Foxwoods Club at Citi Field in New York City. The reception and fundraising event recognizes 30 graduating seniors from New York and New Jersey high schools, along with 10 current college students from the region. The students, who ranked at the top of their classes and distinguished themselves in other areas, will each receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Among this year’s recipients is Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna, a high school senior and this year’s valedictorian from Elmont Memorial High School in Elmont, New York. Uwamanzu-Nna recently received local and national attention as a high school senior after her acceptance into all eight Ivy League colleges. She is also active in her community and is committed to giving back to her Nigerian culture. A full listing of this year’s scholarship recipients can be found at www.bpscholarships.com.

“BP and our independent retail station owners have a long history of supporting educational programs in this region,” said John Carey, BP’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “BP is once again proud to support excellence and hard work in the classroom and to give back to the communities where we live and work.”

The New York and New Jersey region is home to more than 500 BP-branded retail fueling sites. The owners and operators of local BP stations support the scholarship program and the company provides additional funding through the BP Foundation and corporate donations.
