Hydraulic surge - system analysis

Surge piping

Surge analysis creates a surge envelope for the entire pipeline/piping section. The analysis is a hydraulic model that takes into account the maximum allowable operating pressure of pipe/valves/fittings, the pressure control and shutdown settings of pumping equipment, the relief system capabilities, and the location and functionality of remote and automated valves.

This course covers the requirements and guidance for performing a surge analysis on pipeline segments, as well as facility and terminal piping.

Lessons include:

Where surge analyses are performed:

  • Pipelines
  • Facilities

Software requirements:

  • Pipelines
  • Facilities

User competency data for the models:

  • Pipeline data
  • Facility and terminal data
  • General data
  • Fluid data
  • Data for missing pipe specifications
